Shipping Insurance Explained: Optional Protection, Required Coverage, and Order Totals
A beginner's guide to what shipping insurance covers in the checkout calculation, when it can be optional or required, and where it appears in the final total.

Shipping moves a finished order through warehouses, carriers, customs, and local delivery. Good packaging reduces risk, but it cannot remove every loss or damage event. Shipping insurance is a separate order component designed to provide the configured level of protection for that journey.
Shipping fee and insurance are different
The shipping fee pays for the selected transport service. Shipping insurance is a protection charge associated with shipment risk. Paying one does not automatically mean the other is included.
The checkout breakdown shows them separately so you can understand what is being purchased. Customs duties and import taxes are separate again and may be assessed by destination authorities.
Insurance can be optional below the configured thresholds
When an order is below the current value and quantity thresholds, insurance may be offered as a customer choice. Selecting it adds the displayed insurance amount to the order. Leaving it unselected means the order proceeds without that optional line.
Use the choice to consider order value, replacement difficulty, destination, and your tolerance for transit risk. The option is not a statement that uninsured delivery will fail.

Insurance can become required
When the configured order-price or item-quantity threshold is exceeded, insurance becomes mandatory. The server evaluates the live order facts; the browser does not decide whether the threshold applies.
This matters near a boundary. Changing quantity, product selection, or customization can move the order from optional to required coverage. Recalculate the shipping quote after material changes so the displayed breakdown reflects the current order.
The amount is locked when the order is created
Shipping insurance is decided and recorded at order creation because it depends on the goods and current insurance settings, not on which payment method you choose later. The selected payment method can still add its own surcharge, but it does not rewrite the insurance decision.
The base order calculation is:
Goods and customization subtotal + shipping fee + insurance = base amount before a payment-method surcharge.
If a surcharge applies, its base includes the subtotal, shipping, and insurance. This is why a payment-method comparison must happen after the shipping and insurance choices are known.
A quote must be current and single-use
Checkout uses a signed shipping quote containing the current logistics context. Creating an order consumes that quote. If the address, contents, method, or insurance choice changes, calculate again rather than relying on an earlier result.
Insurance does not replace careful evidence
Keep order details, packaging, and delivery evidence when reporting a qualifying issue. If a parcel arrives visibly damaged, document the condition before discarding packaging. Insurance is a resolution mechanism, not permission to use weak packaging or ignore carrier procedures.
A practical checkout check
Before creating the order, confirm the destination, shipping method, shipping fee, insurance state, and total. After order creation, treat the order breakdown as the locked record. Read the Shipping Policy for current responsibilities and claim conditions.
Frequently asked questions
- Is shipping insurance the same as the shipping fee?
- No. The shipping fee pays for transport, while insurance is a separate protection charge. Both appear independently in the order breakdown, and destination duties or taxes are separate again.
- When does shipping insurance become required?
- It becomes mandatory when the current configured order-value or item-quantity threshold is exceeded. The server evaluates the final order facts, so changing quantity or contents can change the result.
- Can changing my payment method remove shipping insurance?
- No. Insurance is locked when the order is created from the goods and shipping context. A payment method may add a surcharge later, but it does not rewrite the insurance decision.
