Product and Craft Compatibility: Why Every Technique Is Not Available on Every Garment
Understand how garment material, printable sides, active craft availability, and product-specific technique choices shape the custom-print options you see.
Finding a craft in the library does not automatically mean it appears for every product. Customization combines two physical systems: the garment and the decoration process. The available choices must make sense for both.
Compatibility starts with the garment
A technique interacts with fabric weight, stretch, texture, seams, coatings, and panel construction. A process that works on stable sweatshirt fleece may be unsuitable for a very light stretch fabric. Embroidery that looks clean on a structured cap panel may distort a thin jersey area.
Treat the product as the substrate, not as a neutral canvas. Read its material and construction details before choosing an effect.
Products can have a focused craft set
A product may be configured with a specific set of crafts that are appropriate for it. If no restriction is configured, all currently active crafts can remain available. If a focused set exists, the custom-print flow narrows the craft library to that set.
This is why two similar-looking products may show different technique choices. The difference is product-level compatibility, not an error in your account.
Availability is still current
A product's compatibility does not make an inactive craft selectable. The customer-facing list uses the current active craft library. A technique that is being reviewed, retired, or temporarily unavailable can disappear from new customization even when historical requests still remember it.
Historical quotes and orders keep their own snapshots. A later catalog change does not rewrite the work that was already accepted.
Printable surfaces matter too
A SKU can define which images are valid front or back bases for custom printing. A side with no configured base image is not an available design surface. If both sides are unavailable, the custom-print entry is hidden for that SKU.
This protects placement accuracy. The editor needs a known garment view before it can position artwork. A lifestyle photo with folds or an obstructed side is not equivalent to a clear surface image.
Compatibility is not the same as suitability
A craft can be selectable and still be a poor choice for one piece of artwork. Compatibility answers whether the product and process can be offered together. Suitability asks whether the process serves the artwork's detail, texture, scale, color, and quantity.
Use the craft's ratings and guidance for suitability, and its matrix/MOQ information for commercial fit.
What to do when a craft is missing
Check in this order:
- Confirm you selected the intended product and SKU.
- Confirm the side you want to design has an available base image.
- Look for the craft in the general Crafts catalog.
- If it exists there but not in the editor, choose another compatible product or include the requirement in a Free Customization brief for review.
Do not select a different craft only because its name seems close. A production technique is part of the quote and order snapshot, so the chosen method should describe the actual requested result.
